SEO Shockwave | Future Proof Your SEO

Shane Atkins 5 years ago

In looking at the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) industry as a whole, it becomes quite obvious that it is a constantly changing beast. As a person who has been in the SEO industry for many years, one thing has become a painfully undeniable lesson: that SEO in it’s truest form will always be evolving and changing, and adapting to the turbulent landscape that is a characteristic of the online digital internet age. Today’s Best Practices and Strategies could easily be tomorrows old news.

So what is a person to do? Enter SEO Shockwave.  SEO Shockwave is the concept that the things and activities that we participate in today, this week, this month and this year could set the standard to where we will find ourselves in the future. We must do the right things now if we are to be industry leaders. We must work diligently to make sure that the things we apply to our business today will provide value well into the future.

To do this, one must realize that they cannot just rush to do what seems like right thing at the time. In this world, we have a mob-type mentality when it comes to things of the internet. As entrepreneurs, we don’t want to miss out on the “next big thing,” and loose the potential of increasing our financial bottom line. We easily can get caught up in the hype and promises of a new product or technique that just came out and get lost in the crowd of excitement.

Instead, we need to treat our SEO efforts like a shockwave. There is a point of origin which would be your immediate activities. Then as you set off the shockwave, or put the activity into motion, it creates ripples of power that permeate outwards into the internet society. If you have ever seen a shockwave of any kind, you will understand the raw power that it can create. Your efforts need to be long lasting. Do things that matter, and provide actual value to your web properties. Don’t get caught up in the hype of day, causing you to fail.

So what are some things that are being talked about to future proof your SEO?

 Value.

You must provide value to your websites. Value is what people are drawn towards when they are searching online. They need something and your site needs to be able to not only give them what they need, but deliver it such a way that you give them what they need while over delivering. This could be in the form of superior content, well researched, thoughtful, deep & meaningful, that will provide them with a deep sense of satisfaction when they are done reading it.

 Global SEO

Enterprise SEO marketers are seeing tremendous value in Global SEO. It is forecasted that a Global SEO ranking will be very important in the future. International Markets are a vast resource that have still yet to be fully realized.

 Diversification

Diversify your website monetization efforts. This is very important if you are using your website to make money. NEVER put all your eggs in one basket when planning for the future. Don’t just create a website that is solely reliant on Adsense for example. Don’t just build a site that only Google will love. As history has shown, tens of thousands of businesses have been devastated when Google rolled out updates and the site’s traffic were destroyed. This even happens to website’s that were doing legitimate SEO and were only employing the wisdom of the day.

Until Google agrees to full transparency and publishes their algorithm, (which they never will) you should never rely on them for the future.  Think about it. They are a business. They are here to make money. They can do business how they want to do business. They don’t owe you anything. Nobody knows what plans they have for the future include. They keep their algorithm a secret to protect themselves from competition. Why would you put all your faith in them by giving them complete control over your financial future?

There are many ways to diversify.

  • Adsense
  • Direct Sales
  • Adwords
  • Affiliate Programs
  • Selling Ad Space – directly or through an Ad Network
  • Making your website friendly for other Search Engines such as BING, Yahoo, MSN, Baidu
  • Building a Mailing List – This will put you in total control of all your visitors that are on your mailing list. Search Engines cannot take this away from you.
  • Social Media – Build an audience here for future interaction

Focus on becoming a brand independent of Search Engines

Local & Blended Search

It is important to optimize for local search going into 2014. Going into the future, quality and relevancy will play a big part in SEO. SERPS will be populated with results that deliver exactly what the searcher is looking for. There are millions of searches done everyday that are directed towards local geographies.

 Page-Based SEO

SEO strategy is evolving away from totally being keyword driven. Overall content is becoming more relevant everyday. Writing styles, text lengths, depth of content, are very important. Consumers need to have content delivered to them by page quality, not just because the correct keyword percentage was used.

 Content Creation & Management

Relevant content is the most valuable resource while building a website. It must be intentionally decided that you will provide vast amounts of incredibly relevant, detailed, and holistic content. if you want to succeed. With all this high quality content, it needs to be managed well and understood. Things like Social Engagement, Blog Outreach, Case Studies, Surveys, Infographics, Articles will all be very important as we move ahead.

 Panda & Penguin Proofing

As part of an overall strategy of not totally relying on Google, we must still work with them to bring traffic to our sites. Our first goal should to be create a site that provides quality and value first. A part of this means making sure we don’t violate Google’s Panda and Penguin. As we move into 2014, we will see a bigger importance on tracking our linking structures and making sure they don’t violate Google’s TOS.

In the past SEO Companies could get away with not fixing every little detail that was causing problems. Their sites would still rank high because of backlinks, etc… However, in the future we will be analyzing all details of our sites to make sure even the smallest detail is correct.

 Social Media

Social Sharing and Social Media will continue to be very important moving ahead. Building a quality audience through these channels will be vital to success. Interaction will be key. People want to feel connected, and the more you communicate with them, they will see you as a leader.

The social media revolution will place much more importance on things such as big data, and social data mining. It is important to learn how social media affects your brand visibility and how this transfers into conversions and actual profit.

 Mobile

While building sites, it is vital to optimize for mobile and tablet usage. The majority of consumers will be mobile by next year. They are accessing content by the terabyte through their smart phones, and you need to be able to deliver it to them adequately.

 Company Synergy

The success of your business in the future relies, in part, of your ability to transcend all levels of your company, and permeate SEO and Social Media into your culture and organization. SEO is not just a department at your business. Everyone, from the CEO to the intern should fully understand the importance of SEO and that each person in the company has a role to play. I’ll cover this concept more in depth in a coming article.

As a person can see, there are many things that can be done to work on future proofing your SEO efforts. Things will continue to change into the future so we must be flexible and ready to adapt to new concepts as they are realized and innovated. Never loose site of the big picture of the entire industry and how it is a vital part of the industry.
